Mould and mildew are some of your biggest enemies when it comes to outdoor timber equipment. Mould is a natural occurrence and can develop when moisture builds up in or around the wood. If you live in a humid climate, near water or in an area with limited sunlight, you're particularly at risk.
It is not a manufacturing fault, but rather a sign that the timber needs care or re-sealing.
Why Mould Appears
Mould and mildew can develop for several reasons, including:
Prolonged exposure to wet or humid weather
Insufficient airflow or drainage around your equipment
Lack of maintenance, such as failing to re-stain or seal timber surfaces
Placement in shaded or damp areas (e.g. under trees or near pools)
Even high-quality natural timber can be affected over time, as it naturally absorbs and releases moisture throughout the seasons.
How to Remove Mould
Once you spot mould, treat it straight away to prevent it from growing.
1. Scrub the surface:
Start by scrubbing the affected area with soap and warm water to remove any visible mould. Remember that just because it's no longer visible doesn't mean it's fully gone.
2. Apply a treatment:
Choose one of the following cleaning methods. Do not mix products.
Mould Killer or Removal Spray: You can find off-the-shelf mould removers for outdoor equipment. Always wear protective gloves and follow the product's safety and usage instructions.
Bleach Solution: Mix bleach and water at a 1:1 ratio and scrub the area with a sponge or brush. You can use a stronger mix for spot treatment. Rinse thoroughly and allow the wood to dry completely.
Vinegar: For lingering mould, spray undiluted white vinegar (at least 5% acetic acid) on the affected area. Let it sit for an hour before rinsing clean. This method works best on hard surfaces.
After Cleaning
Once your equipment is completely dry, apply a fresh coat of timber paint or stain to seal the surface and protect it from future moisture. Regular re-staining (every 12 months) or painting is a non-negotiable for maintaining the timber's appearance and lifespan.
Preventing Mould from Returning
To reduce the risk of mould growth:
Place your timber equipment in a sunny, well-ventilated area
Avoid positioning it directly under trees or near sprinklers/pools
Reapply protective coatings periodically
Keep the surrounding area clear of leaves and debris
Important Note
Mould and mildew are not covered under our manufacturer warranty, as they are environmental and maintenance-related issues. Regular cleaning, drying and protective treatment are necessary to preserving your outdoor timber equipment.
